Yes, it seems a foolproof way to connect the Afghan people to their own government - blow up their houses and fields and then force them to seek redress. What could wrong there? This is not even to mention the fact that, let's say said Afghan civilian whose house has been destroyed by American bombs travels to see the district governor to demand compensation. Does anyone expect that said district governor will provide the sort of diligent and responsive public service that we are so used to here in the United States - or in one of the world's most corrupt country will demand nothing in return for this good deed except the knowledge that an ordinary Afghan feels increased confidence in their government and its public servants?

It's almost impossible to adequately describe how staggeringly stupid this notion is.

Now granted, it can be dangerous to draw too much of a conclusion from one anonymous quote in the Washington Post . . . but then again this sort of rhetoric is indicative of the counter-insurgency mind-set that has taken over the US military. "Connecting the people to their government" has become some sort of totemistic goal in Afghanistan divorced from any larger reality of what Afghans actually want, how state loyalty is derived and above all, what are the actual US national interests in Afghanistan.

The pseudo-science of FM 3-24 has somehow convinced COIN devotees that the simple provision of good services to "the people" (even if provided by a third party) will ensure loyalty and bring their support. Believing that destroying an Afghan's home in order to improve the process of providing those services is merely the logical next step in this flawed belief system.

The US mission in Afghanistan, which has always been a bit unhinged, has seemingly gone completely off the rails in recent weeks. We have the President and NATO talking about withdrawal dates for US troops but having almost no discussion on what our actual end game looks like in Afghanistan and how we might get there. We have a US general who has basically taken complete control over the mission in Afghanistan and has become as much an impediment as a catalyst to the realization of a realistic political strategy. And speaking of political strategies - it very much appears that we don't have one. Well other than the misguided belief that somehow pounding the Taliban into submission will convince them to sue for peace. 

At this point destroying the village to save it sounds like something of an improvement.
