David Petraeus Is Out Of Line UPDATED Posted by Michael Cohen

So apparently some jackasses in Florida want to burn copies of the Koran on September 11th and General Petraeus is not happy about it - and he emailed a note to the Associated Press decrying the act:

"Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan - and around the world - to inflame public opinion and incite violence."

This follows on Petraeus's interview with the Wall Street Journal where he warned that burning the Koran "could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort. It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

Now I would imagine that Petraeus is correct, but there is something deeply disquieting about having a four-star general characterize an expression of constitutionally protected free speech as a danger to American troops and US national security operations.

I sort of hate slippery slope arguments, but it seems to me that this is the very definition of a dangerous slippery slope.

For example, would people comfortable if Petraeus characterized an anti-war march as a threat to the US mission in Afghanistan? Or what if Petraeus condemned a Congressional vote to cut funding for a weapons program as a threat to US soldiers in the field? Such behavior would almost certainly overstep not just the letter of civil-military relations, but certainly the spirit. 

It's very hard to see how Petraeus's actions here are much different: well except for the fact that most people would generally agree that these folks in Florida are acting like complete jackasses - but acting like a jackass is a constitutionally protected right in this country. And I for one am fearful of the chilling effect on legitimate expressions of free speech to have a four star general characterizing such actions in the manner that Petraeus has.

To be sure, Petraeus has every right to condemn the burning of a Koran as a disrespectful act; but to characterize it in a manner that suggests it is treasonous . . . well that is simply beyond the pale of how a military officer should act. 

I sympathize with General Petraeus that this is going to create problems for him in Afghanistan; but that is the price we pay for living in a democracy that unambiguously guarantees freedom of expression.

UPDATE: On Twitter, Shadi Hamid points out that Petraeus's statement is an "obviously correct descriptive statement." He's right. These jackasses in Florida are not only besmirching Islam, they're besmirching Christianity AND they're putting American troops in danger.  If they had even a smidgen of self-awareness of how their actions will be perceived overseas they would cease and desist (or perhaps that's the point). Their behavior is beyond idiotic and to be honest I don't really have an issue with the substance of what Petraeus has said.

But look, I can say things like this - I'm a guy with a laptop. When David Petraeus wades into the territory of characterizing legitimate free speech as borderline treasonous . . . well that has far more dangerous and chilling implications for free expression. 

And just to put a cherry on this whole incident - as Matt Duss points out, this pastor in Florida has "described his motivation for burning Islam’s sacred text: 'We do not want sharia law or sharia courts' in the United States, he said."

Boy, I wonder where he got that crazy idea from.

You know these other jackasses who keep making ridiculous warning about sha'ria law as a way to scare Americans and score political points against President Obama might want to also consider the consequences of their words and actions.

I've read your statement twice already, and it seems that it's not all that logical. Did Petraeus actually call the Koran burning treasonous? Did he ask or command that the Koran burning not take place? It doesn't seem he did either of these things, at least from the quotes you provide. It seems like you're blowing this all out of proportion. He seems to simply be saying that Action A (Koran burning) will have Effect X (backlash in the theater of war). In other words he's saying, you're being a jackass and here's the possible results down the line. That seems to be part of the social and political dialogue this country is built on. I'm still uncertain why you find it so "deeply disquieting."

Seems like a stretch to me. My sense is that he's saying that it will simply make the fight that much more difficult. His statement is much more focused on the well being of the troops than any sense that the jackasses are unwittingly or otherwise colluding with the enemy. Maybe it's splitting hairs, but to me there's a difference between saying "your actions will make things more difficult and dangerous" and saying "your actions are giving aid and comfort to the enemy." Perhaps it's about intent. The jackasses don't intend to give aid to the enemy, and it doesn't sound as if Petraeus thinks it's their intent. I'm seeing it as a mole hill, but, as you've been saying, you're free to make it into a mountain.
