Hamid Karzai . . . Our Diem
Posted by Michael Cohen
So apparently the White House has decided that instead of admitting Hamid Karzai is a poor ally and a lousy partner for a robust counter-insurgency operation . . . we're going to be nice to him:
The Americans are pulling out all the stops for Mr. Karzai as part of a new charm offensive. Mrs. Clinton, one of the few people in the administration with a good rapport with him, has invited him for a stroll through the grounds of a private enclave in Georgetown. Richard C. Holbrooke, the special representative to the region, was dispatched to Andrews Air Force Base at 7 a.m. on Monday to personally greet Mr. Karzai. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will be Mr. Karzai’s host for a private dinner at the vice president’s mansion.
And Lt. Gen. Karl W. Eikenberry, the ambassador to Afghanistan, who personally escorted Mr. Karzai on the flight from Kabul to Washington, was sent off to assure reporters at the White House that he now had faith in the Afghan president’s determination to succeed, a position that stands in contrast to his diplomatic cable last fall denouncing Mr. Karzai as “not an adequate strategic partner.”
The new warmth is oozing all the way to the Oval Office. President Obama, in an unusual show of hospitality and presidential attention toward a visiting foreign delegation, will be host to Mr. Karzai and others in his government for almost a full day at the White House, including a lunch on Wednesday followed by a rare joint news conference.
This reminded me of a passage I recently read in David Halberstam's "The Best and Brightest." When you're reading below substitute the name Dubrow (US Ambassador to Vietnam) for Eikenberry; Diem for Karzai and Vietcong for Taliban:
The Dubrow (Eikienberry) tour had not been a happy one; he had watched the beginning of the Vietcong (Taliban) pressure against Diem (Karzai), and simultaneously the accelerated estrangement of Diem (Karzai) from friends, allies and reality. Their discussions had become longer and longer monologues, and then, as Dubrow (Eikenberry) insisted on interrupting and telling Diem (Karzai) how poorly things were going, their meetings became more and more infrequent. Dubrow (Eikenberry) was, if anything, a very conservative figure, but he had been told to be candid with Diem (Karzai), and that candor was not becoming unpleasant . . . His pleas to Diem (Karzai) about governmental reform, about improving the quality of commanders, about broadening the base of the government resembled nothing so much as the pleas General Stillwell to Chiang Kai-Shek to do the same thing, and they were met with the same lack of appreciation. By the end of his tour, Dubrow (Eikienberry) was virtually persona non grata.
When the Administration decided to replace him, it did not change the policy; it did not doubt the accuracy of what Dubrow (Eikenberry) had been reporting, but it could not afford a serious re-evaluation of the policy, dependent as it was on Diem (Karzai) with all his faults. So the change in policy would go from being honest with Diem (Karzai) to being nice to him, hoping that somehow this would create a new confidence and mutuality of trust.
Eerie, isn't it?
Practically on cue, we have this tweet from Andrew Exum yesterday, "One of these guys has to go. And I think it is obvious Eik. has neither a relationship with Karzai or believe in COIN.
I'll tell you; where is George Santanaya when you need him.
And yet you can spell Diem with DIME.
Paradox.

Isn't it amusing to see Eikenberry and Holbrooke, former critics of Karzai, bending their knees to kiss his ass.

It was a big week for LeBron James; he grabbed himself a second MVP trophy and the Cavs moved on to the next round of the Playoffs. We saw a bunch of LeBrons, like the MVP Air Max LeBron VII, an unreleased LeBron VII P.S., and another sneak peek at his eighth shoe. LeBron’s upcoming shoe wasn’t the only preview we got, as a sample of the Jordan Melo M7 made its way to the public. Speaking of being in public, even more notable celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Mick Jagger, C.C. Sabathia, and Nelly came out with some heat of their own, while the Sneaker Friends 2010 Event in the ATL really burned a hole in our eyes. We also received a ton of glimpses at upcoming releases, from more Air Attacks, 90’s Retros, and classic silhouettes for Fall 2010. Who doesn’t want to ugg boots clearance have a good future? It’s something everyone desires. But, for that, you must first accept that your future is your responsibility. The one who determines whether or not you have a good future is you ugg boots outlet. Don’t expect the circumstances or someone else to take care of it for you. It’s you who must take action ugg boots clearance.
With that understood, what should we do to have a good future ugg boots clearance?
I believe that one important thing you should do is investing in your future. Investing in your future means making some sacrifices in the present to reap rewards later ugg boots clearance. It means investing your time and money in something that might not give you immediate return, but which could give you tremendous value later. It also means preparing for the uncertainties of the future ugg boots clearance.
Sadly, many people don’t do it ugg boots clearance. They only think about the present. Therefore, when something unexpected happens, they aren’t ready and get into a difficult situation. For example, many people just do the same job with the same skills all the time. They don’t improve themselves and prepare for future changes. They neither learn new skills nor expand their knowledge. Then, when the situation changes, their skills are no longer relevant and they lose their job ugg boots outlet.

By this point, you may have wondered if this book addresses advanced selling skills.Legitimate question.Let me answer it this way: I recently worked with a client who was rather insistent on finding
an advanced selling skills seminar.During our discussion, I suggested that success in a sales call is directly linked to performing the basics well.We have all heard about professional sports teams recovering from a slump by going back to basics. The basics never fail us. Strive for brilliance at the basics.I responded to my client by telling her there is no such thing as an advanced customer. In my years of sales experience,I have never heard of anyone referred to as such—tough maybe, but not advanced.I recognize that this is a new concept, but I feel that customers simply represent a variety of positions, some more senior than others.Regardless of their position, all customers have universal agendas, such as ugg boots outlet"why should I buy from you?how are you going to help my business?what's in it for me?"
These questions are common denominators to every sales call. Advanced selling is simply a matter of understanding and applying the Sequential Model, coupled with having a positive attitude and the
confidence to pursue a dialogue with fellow human beings, regardless of their position or experience. My client accepted the analogy, and I proceeded to design a sales course using basic sales techniques
that met her training objectives. Consider this: The Carnegie Foundation did a study and discovered that only 20% of a person's sales success comes from product knowledge. It's not just what you know about your product but, more importantly,it's how you present yourself. This report went on to suggest that up to 80% of success in
sales (and life) is determined by a combination of self-management skills and interpersonal skills.Other organizations also support these findings.Think about it.As a consumer, when was the last time
you purchased ugg boots clearance from someone you didn't like? Not very often. You probably took your business and your bag of money elsewhere.

he asked himself. I don't know. Do you think you have a right to kill any one? No. But I have to. How many of those you have killed have been real UGG Boots Clearance fascists? Very few. But they are all the enemy to whose force we are opposing force. But you like the people of Navarra better than those of any other part of Spain. Yes. And you kill UGG Boots Clearance them. Yes. If you don't believe it go down there to the camp. Don't you know it is wrong to kill? Yes. But you do it? Yes. And you still believe absolutely that your cause is right? Yes.
It is right, he told himself, not reassuringly, but proudly. I believe in the people and their right to govern themselves as they wish. But you mustn't believe in killing, he told himself. You must do it as a necessity UGGS Clearance but you must not believe in it. If you believe in it the whole thing is wrong.
But how many do you suppose you have killed? I don't know because I won't keep track. But do you know? Yes. How many? You can't be sure how many. Blowing the trains you kill many. Very many. But you can't be sure. But of Ugg boots clearance those you are sure of? More than twenty. And of those how many were real fascists? Two that I am sure of. Because I had to shoot them when we took them prisoners at Usera. And you did not mind that? No. Nor did you like it? No. I decided never to do Ugg boots clearance it again. I have avoided it. I have avoided killing those who are unarmed.
Listen, he told himself. You better cut this out. This is very bad for you and for your work. Then himself said back to him, You listen, see? Because you are doing something very serious and I have to see you understand it all the time. I have to keep you straight in your head. Because Ugg boots clearance if you are not absolutely straight in your head you have no right to do the things you do for all of them are crimes and no man has a right to take another man's life unless it is to prevent something worse happening to other people. So get it straight and do not lie to yourself.

Ms. Oehne, certainly you can direct your anger at me, but I think would be much more appropriately directed at the generals who sent your brave son into harm's way in pursuit of a mission that is basically unachievable - and in which they seem disinclined to devote proper resources to win.
