Semi-Idiotic Rifle Laws
Posted by Adam Blickstein
The recent raid on a domestic terrorist group in North Carolina has been notable for a number of reasons. But Jeff Stein digs into the story deeper, discussing intriguing incongruities in his purported participation in the Afghan war against the USSR. But Stein also notes another more disconcerting fact from the case:
And there's no law against acquiring such an arsenal in a short time - unless you're a convicted felon - even in these post-9/11 years of homeland security fright. Not even records are kept for the feds.
"That's correct," said Drew Wade, a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). "There's no federal statute prohibiting that."
So, what were there assault weapons?
Rugi Mini 14-inch long gun
Mossburg ATA 100 .270 caliber rifle and Llama Commanche III .357 revolver
Century Arms AK Sporter 7.62 x 39 rifle
Ruger Mini 30 7.62 x 39 rifle
SAGA .308 rifle
Century Arms Polish Tantal 5.45 x 39 rifle
Century Arms C91 .308 rifle
Century Arms M70B1 7.62 x 34 rifle
Ruger mini 14 5.56 rifle and Smith & Wesson M15 .223 rifle
I'm not a gun expert, but I don't think you need all those guns for hunting deer. But it seems to me that while we've restricted nearly everything in the post 9-11 world, from civil rights to bringing shampoo on airplanes while distilling the threat of an attack to a rainbow of fear, all in the name of anti-terror action, we are still enslaved by our gun culture. In fact, the Bush administration, while drumming up threats of briefcase nukes and bombs in malls, loosened, not restricted, the sale and dissemination of firearms. Seems a little incongruous to smart anti-terror policy, one which anyone can amass a small arsenal of deadly arms with little to no attention from the feds. And while President Obama has pledged to reinstate the assault weapons ban, and there is some action in Senate to do this, the NRA still dictates our anti-terror policies in this regard. This should be a wake-up call that it is time to fill this massive hole in our approach to terrorism, domestic or otherwise, and not a moment to contemplate allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons (or a Bushmaster M4) across state lines
The presence of extremism in America is neither new nor surprising, but the sensationalism of "assault weapons" is a cop out in the discussion of counter-terrorism. Each of those listed weapon types were available before the assault weapons ban, be it as a cosmetically modified variant or the pre-ban variant paid at a 75-100% premium. Short of banning all semi-automatics retroactively, Obama's ban would be as ineffective as the last one. The accumulation of these weapons would be no more troubling than if he had accumulated an assortment of hunting rifles (aka sniper rifles). This is a distraction at best, and no more of a threat than the once a year spree killer.

What does deer hunting have to do with anything?
Posted by: Guav | August 02, 2009 at 12:37 AM
And it's already perfectly legal to carry a shotgun or rifle—Bushmaster or otherwise—across state lines.
Posted by: Guav | August 02, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Funny:
You spend half this article rightfully decrying the overreaching and utterly useless legislation that Dubya passed to "protect us from terrorists".... And then promptly demand more.
Dude worried about explosive shoes on a plane? Odviously a paranoid conservative, he should get a life and stop demanding that the gov search all our shoes.
Guy worried that the jazz musician in Coach has a bushmaster in his tuba case? I guess that'd be you.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to dart across state lines and buy about a hundred pounds of explosives. They sell 'em in brightly colored roadside stands, especially around the forth of July.
Posted by: curtis | August 04, 2009 at 01:11 AM
It is correct that you are not a gun expert. Seven of those rifles and handguns are legal for hunting deer in my home state. More would be legal in states without caliber restrictions for big game.
Posted by: SPQR | August 04, 2009 at 01:33 PM
I'm with curtis. Consistency of thought seems to be your personal bugbear.
Posted by: Madrocketscientist | August 04, 2009 at 01:49 PM
About half of those rifles don't even exist. You got the names and descriptions wrong.
I also love how you bitch and moan about security theater in airports and then immediately complain that they don't serve your favorite brand of security theater in gun stores.
Gun control is just symbolic nonsense that never worked. All ever it did was inconvenience law abiding gun owners. I grew up in NYC and all the gun laws have ever done there is make it impossible for people to defend themselves against the heavily armed criminals.

I find the title of your site, Democracy Arsenal, to be very ironic in light of your call for eliminating democracy's arsenal.
Posted by: Rob K | August 04, 2009 at 04:02 PM
Always interesting when latte crowd discovers the underlying facts of life of this country and then proceeds to wet their pants. Get out into the parts of the country where there is little to no expectation that government will take care of everything. The 2nd Amendment is about the right to own firearms for the credible threat they present to those who might consider force in taking our rights away. That is the literal "democracy arsenal". It is not about shooting deer, as delicious as they might be.
Posted by: Flashman | August 04, 2009 at 04:17 PM
One of the problems in your article is that half those rifles don't exist - at least not by the name or configuration you listed.
Oops.
Posted by: anon | August 04, 2009 at 10:03 PM
Well, you got 1 thing right... You're no gun expert...
Posted by: TexasFred | August 04, 2009 at 10:32 PM
It's not about hunting!!!! For God's sake, think man. It's about self defense, fool.
Posted by: Smith | August 04, 2009 at 10:56 PM
semi-idiotic.... I'm confused, is that the author?
Can you please point out ONE SINGLE "loosening" of the "dissemination of firearms" under the Bush administration that was INITIALIZED BY Bush?
Have you perhaps looked at Israel's "anti-terror" policy , which essentially is the acceptance of that pesky ol' second amendment to the constitution that has cut down on small arms attacks and resulted in lunatics strapping explosives to themselves (something they'd have a hard time getting here without the .gov checking for polyps while looking around their body cavities) in order to kill themselves and take as many people with them as possible while limiting border crossings. While they do have to deal with other types of attacks, such as rockets, we aren't as vulnerable to such types of terrorist actions. Unless we upset Canada or the corrupt state to the south of Texas.

As other commenters said, deer hunting has nothing to do with it.
With that being said, these are more than suitable for deer hunting:
Mossburg ATA 100 .270 caliber rifle
Llama Commanche III .357 revolver
Century Arms AK Sporter 7.62 x 39 rifle
Ruger Mini 30 7.62 x 39 rifle
SAGA .308 rifle
Century Arms C91 .308 rifle
Century Arms M70B1 7.62 x 34 rifle
Many hunter would argue these are also suitable, and indeed they used:
Bushmaster M4 A3 16-inch patrolman's rifle
Ruger mini 14 5.56 rifle
Smith & Wesson M15 .223 rifle
In fact the only one not suitable for deer hunting is the:
Century Arms Polish Tantal 5.45 x 39 rifle
But only because suitable ammunition is not currently available.
Also, most of those were **never ever** classed as Assault Weapons.

Forty years ago, Don ED hardy
blew off a Yale fine-art fellowship to pursue the rogue art of tattoo, a timeless and often taboo tradition that captivated him as a boy in the Orange County beach town of Corona del Mar. By 10 he was drawing cars and eagles on kids' backs and arms with wet colored pencils and Maybelline eyeliner. After that he begun to design the Ed hardy picture
At the San Francisco Art Institute in the early '60s, Hardy mastered the demanding art of intaglio etching under the tutelage of the late Gordon Cook, a no-jive blue-collar guy who instilled in Hardy a love of craft, Asian art and the quiet power of Giorgio Morandi's little still life pictures. Which like love kills slowly
But it worked out well for the plucky Hardy boy, who blurred the supposed boundary between "high" and "low" art and carved a path through the worlds of art and commerce. He has drawn images on torsos
, canvases and giant scrolls with equal conviction and aplomb.

Being environmentally friendly, having a low carbon footprint and caring for the environment need no longer be confined to how we shop for consumables, what cars we use or how we choose to travel. You can now wave your underwear as a flag of being eco friendly and green and there has recently been an increase in the amount of men's underwear creeping on to the high street and ecommerce shops that are friendly to our environment and observe fair trade ethics.

There are certain things about the concept of rainwater harvesting that can sometimes be taken for granted, especially if you've been familiar with the process for a while. This was certainly the case for me while talking to a neighbour about rainwater tanks.
One thing that I'd noticed over the last few years driving my car around Melbourne, Australia were the amount of houses that have Rainwater Tanks installed (and they're just the one's you can see from the street).

Oak furniture has spent many years at the top of the charts when it comes to favourites. Its appeal is due to the lovely warm, coarse texture and its functionality. As it is a very hard wood, oak is superb for making furniture which will stand the test of time. If you have a young family and need tables and chairs which are robust, oak is definitely worth a thought. Although it is often quite expensive, you will find that the items made from oak will keep their good looks and will probably still be around to take a battering from your children's children in years to come. The price tag on some items may put people off buying, but, if you were to consider getting some oak unfinished furniture, you may be able to save yourself quite a few dollars.
