Fighting continues in Gaza despite the UN’s calls for a ceasefire.  The U.S. abstained on the ceasefire vote.  The UN suspended aid deliveries to Gaza due to attacks, including one that killed a UN driver.

A January 1st CIA strike killed two senior al Qaeda leaders in Pakistan. 

The U.S. unemployment rate rose to 7.2% in December, the lowest since 1993.  2.6 million jobs were lost in 2008, the most since 1945.

Russia prepares to resume shipping gas to the EU through the Ukraine under a monitoring agreement.  Hundreds of thousands of Europeans are without heat and protests have broken out due to fuel shortages.
