Liveblogging Tonight's Debate
Posted by Max Bergmann
NSN staff will be liveblogging tonight's Presidential debate - whether John McCain is there or not. Check Democracy Arsenal throughout the debate for instant analysis and fact checking and look for our wrap-up at the end of the night.
Also check out the folks at Think Progress who will also be liveblogging.
I see the president as our Chief Diplomat as well as the Chief Executive or Commander-in-Chief and I agree that we should talk to everyone. I belief the problems we face today is based on the fact that we did not, as a nation, answer the question, Why do they hate us?
Is it too late to rethink how we are perceived by others and addressing those perceptions headon?

As president, which candidate is best prepared to tackle the paramount issues of a declining economy, overextended military, and strained relationships abroad? Explain.
Posted by: Dominique Johnson | September 26, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Well I believe Senator Barack Obama is the right candidate to resurrect and restore those relationships. He is an individual filled with wisdom, foresight, confidence, courage, pride, assertiveness, humanitarianism, and the ability to be responsible (multitask) is a perfect choice for a leader. Broad-based
characteristics will lead to flexible domestic and foreign policies, less conflict, more prosperity, therefore making it easier to chieve our nation's goals.

What is with McCain's Tie?
Posted by: Ryan | September 26, 2008 at 09:32 PM
When will McCain give a specific answer telling us his opinions on national security, the economy, the war, and domestic affairs?
Posted by: Malcolm Jones | September 26, 2008 at 09:40 PM
With 600 billion spent on the war and 700 billion going towards the economy, How are the candidates going to balance their plans with the need to causciously spend with trying to stablilize the economy?
Posted by: Malcolm Jones | September 26, 2008 at 09:44 PM
For most of us it is a mystery that we can on the one hand talk about a declining economy and on the other talk about continuing a war that is costly ( over $600,000, 000) and ineffective. Can we have both "guns and butter"? Obviously not.
The decision here should be a no brainer. Winning in Iraq does not mean very much to most of us if are lifestyles here at home are adversely affected.

The League of Democracies sounds like a goood idea, but the bottem line is how much will this "League of Democracies " cost us? Additionally, what will this League's relationship be to the United Nations? Will make this organization any more successful in dealing with countries like Iran than any other organization? Wouldn't it be confronted with some of the same problems as exisiting organizations?
Posted by: Carol | September 26, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Mr. McCain must not have the text of Iran's Presidents speech before the UN. It was a more temperate speech that as Chief of Diplomacy which may be an opportunity to change trends in Iran.
Posted by: Sheldon Collins | September 26, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Like Senator Obama, I agree on the art of diplomacy. It is like the old adage- "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". I would feel more comfortable talking with countries like Iran than waiting for them to knife me from behind.
Posted by: Carol | September 26, 2008 at 10:13 PM
I agree with the quote keep your friends close and your enemies closer....because you are going to know what your friends want..they are usually gonna agree with you...your enemies mind, plans, and ideas are the ones youre trying to see and understand.

Certainly, the need to revaluate the relationship with Russia. However, there seems to be very little difference between the two Senator McCain's postion and Senator Obama's. Yet, it is important to realize that Russia is not the same Russia that emerged from the Cold war and the collapse of the Soviet Union. In this light , the policy must be reconsidered.
Posted by: Carol | September 26, 2008 at 10:25 PM
To what extent and in what ways specifically are we safer now than we were on 9/11? Somehow, the fact that Bin Laden is still alive and free dosen't make some of us feel secure or safe.
Posted by: Carol | September 26, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Perhaps, Senator McCain should stay awy from the subtle digs about the not "needing on the job training" considering his choice of a Vice presidential running mate.
Posted by: Carol | September 26, 2008 at 10:37 PM
Senator Barack Obama would use soft diplomacy when working with other nations' for the enhancement of America.America must be kept safe.
Posted by: Nictorria | September 26, 2008 at 10:40 PM
What's McCain talking about? Obama's always been much more forward thinking and focused on a "greener" America than him. His sudden claim that it's been the opposite is interesting.

I understand fully the situation in North Korea. In a detailed discussio of North Korea's governance, that statistic would make sense. Hearing it randomly slip out rather than, say, North Korea's efforts to develop nuclear weapons which Obama pointed out was a consequence of Bush administration policies, was a little jarring, like a strange word association test. North Korea? Short people!
