8.1 Billion Hours
Posted by Patrick Barry
Seriously, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin's relentless attacks on community organizers is a massive, massive insult to volunteers and public servants across the country. Their basic insinuation was that Barack Obama, and public servants like him spend their days twiddling their thumbs, a massive burden to society. This in a country where selfless civic engagement is highly prized. According to volunteeringinamerica.gov, 60.8 million Americans contributed over 8.1 billion hours in of unpaid service to the country last year. 8.1 billion hours, and Republicans decided to trample on it.
Yeah, what the hell is with that?! I was even under the impression that a lot of community organizers were even Republican. What is the Palin philosophy? That real Americans just stay home and sit on their fat asses watching reality shows while they let the politicians handle the community? That everyone who puts in time organizing their community to vote to keep a toxic incinerator out of the neighborhood is just some kind of lazy rabble-rouser? What a terrible miscalculation that line was. Obama will clean up with it.

I listened with half interest to Robert Siegel’s All Things Considered report “GOP’s Huckabee Has Advice For McCain, Palin” today as I assumed it would consist of yet another repetition of the Republican Party line.
I was shocked to attention, however, when I heard Gov. Huckabee say “We don’t elect a president based solely on what they know. Because if we did, we’d go to Harvard, we’d find the most learn-ed scholar in all of Harvard and we’d elect him president.”
I want to thank Gov. Huckabee for such a clear statement of the GOP’s hiring practices and note that they stand in direct contrast to those of my own party.
(Senator Obama having graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School.)

No it's not an insult ...it's merely a means of ridiculing the claim that a governor (like Bill Clinton?) has neither the experience nor talent to exist in the world of foreign affairs, and therefore be president.
A little oversensitive? This is our substitute for coups, revolutions and riots in the street. 1824, 1860, Grover Cleveland? This is nothing. Get real.
The media generated frenzy over Palin all of which turns out to be MANUFACTURED is a sign of naked fear.. you know, the emotion Mr. Biden was emitting this morning.
With good reason.

What I find so ironic about such a comment is that a major Republican party talking point, in general, is that if the government gets out of the way (at providing services/aid) volunteers and charities will step up.
So it's a bit odd to mock those same people and say that they're worthless.
