Those with children will get the reference to Little Einsteins. But the Little Einsteins in the White House aren’t measuring up to Disney’s young problem solvers, and frankly are not doing their Republican friends in Congress any favors.

Republicans should be getting the message that if they want “Mission Completion!” to be shouted from the rooftops, they need Tevo, the Disney Channel, and their Favorite Rocket Ship, because they’re not going to get it from the White House.

 

Yesterday in a video conference with Congress, General Odierno claimed that Patraeus’s September report (Which Patraeus thinks is too soon) would show progress, but added that "In order to do a good assessment, I need at least till November to do that."

Hmm.

Couple that with the reporting on the benchmarks on July 15. The President suggested we’ve seen “satisfactory progress” on 8 of the 18 benchmarks, but Fred Kaplan points out correctly that this is little more than a sham to anyone who looks past the headline.

This week, the White House trotted out Fran Townsend to report on the latest NIE. She stressed that we need to stay in Iraq in order to fight Al Qaeda, despite the NIE’s finding’s that those who want to harm America are operating out of Pakistan and Afghanistan and taking advantage of the training ground provided by the sectarian chaos and US presence in Iraq.

I hesitate to heap this into where it looks like it’s heading…endless war? Is that what the White House is after? I’d like to think that doesn’t sit well with the many Republicans who’ve hung their hat on the September report. They, after all, are the one’s standing in the way, as it seems most of America and the Democrats realize we need to be talking about how soon, instead of if, we transition the mission. 

Republicans are no doubt uncomfortable with the idea of abandoning Bush’s aimless efforts in Iraq, but they need more than a gut feeling to keep them there, and the reasons they’ve been giving are dwindling by the minute. The White House spin simply can’t hide the fact that the policy is a failure.

They choices aren't easy, but there are there. Republicans have a choice to make about the mission in Iraq, the mission to fight our terrorist enemies, and their mission as elected officials.

If the Republicans decide to tell the President that his time is up and end the 6 year hiatus on the war on terror, they won’t get a round of applause for finally realizing what the rest of us know, but they might be able to prevent getting yanked off the stage next November, and might actually get on board with the more important effort of fulfilling their responsibilities to secure the country.
