I remember from a long long while back that the Marines were intending on updating the Small Wars Manual (ca 1940) to the modern age.

First off, thanks for posting this. The Small Wars Journal has placed a link back to the Democracy Arsenal from our site and on the Small Wars Council, under Blog Watch.

Nice blog here, timely and topical as those that follow Small Wars fully understand that it is most certainly not solely a military problem (to say the least).

On the rewrite of the 1940 Small Wars Manual, the Marine Corps started this effort several years ago (1999-2000) and ended up with a very good "academia-style" monograph that addressed the nature and philosophy of Small Wars. That said, there were several good "boots on the ground" portions and much was said about the critical interagency piece.

Marine Corps leadership decided they wanted the update to be more in the style of the original manual and this year’s (AY 2005 - 2006) Command and Staff College class has taken on rewriting (updating) the SWM.

Select students have been tasked to update certain chapters and sections and are about 1/3 to 1/2 along the way.

I encourage anyone who is interested in contributing to this effort to visit the Small Wars Council Community of Interest (our bulletin board) as some of the students have posted requests for additional information in support of the rewrite. For others, please jump in the discourse – we sorely need the non-military perspective of our Small Wars partners.

The main site has healthy Interagency / Transition / Security Operations sections in the "SWJ library" - any suggestions on additions there would also be greatly appreciated.
