if my French doesn't fail me, Le Monde is reporting that Pat Robertson went on his Christian Broadcasting Network Monday night and said, "If Chavez thinks we are trying to kill him, we ought to go and do it."

He further explained that assassinating Chavez "would be much cheaper than launching a war." 

It has fallen to poor Sean McCormack at the State Department and GOP Senator Norm Coleman to repudiate this.  For once I think Coleman's comment was perfect:  "incredibly stupid."

But since there isn't much strategic coming out of this Administration about Latin America -- trade agreements and dire warnings about leftists -- this will have lots of impact overseas, even if it is barely noticed here.  And I'd like to see one of Mr McCormack's bosses step up and repudiate Robertson, loudly. 

In my years of church-going, I have never encountered Jesus' Sermon on Cost-Efficient Elimination of One's Enemies.  But perhaps this is just one more thing that the liberal Protestant hierarchy has been keeping from me.

(Meanwhile, Tim Padgett at Time points out that Robertson could hardly do more to bolster Chavez' popularity.  Maybe Robertson is hoping Chavez will respond in kind?  "Do unto others..." now that I do remember.)

I'm not sure I understand what all the hubbub is about. Pat Robertson doesn't work for the State Department, the last I heard, so he can pretty much wish for whatever he wants. I mean, apparently it's OK for Ward Churchill to call the people who died on 9-11 "little Eichmans" and for Zunigas to say "screw 'em" in reference to US contractors killed and mutilated by a mob in Fallujah, but it's not OK for Robertson to speculate that a timely assassination might save us a lot of trouble?

Frankly, it'd be nice of someone assassinated the Burmese ruling junta and Robert Mugabe too, but as Plato observed a long time ago knocking off a tyrant is easier said than done.

And don't go saying that Chavez was "elected" because he has since revealed his true colors attempting to silence dissent and consolidate power in precisely the way any run-of-the-mill dictator would go about it.

The problem is tha Chavez is only the symptom, not the real problem. But you know, don't get all huffy and stuff... It's not as though Robertson made any enemies he didn't already have, either.

I agree with Demosophist regarding Pat Robertson's remarkes about Hugo Chavez. How can Ward Churchill keep his job after calling the victims of 9/11 "Little Eichmans" and implying that the victims of 9/11 got what they deserved.

When the terrorists attacked on 9/11 and our buildings were burning down, there were people in some countries rejoicing in the streets. It seems that that there are people inside America and outside America that hate us so much that they will rejoice in our losses.

I do not support Pat Robertson's television ministry and do not agree with many of his evangelical views. I belong to a large mainstream denomination. However, the Bush adminstration owes a lot to the evangelical movement for his election and reelection. The Bush administration and the Republicans must be careful when dealing the this community. Because, they can sure turn out the votes.

On the other hand, I don't know if anything will save the Republicans in 2006 and 2008. They have mismanaged policies issues and have lost the support of many Americans that voted Republican in 2000 and 2004.

The way to deal with Hego Chavez and the other OPEC dictatorships is to stop buying their oil. We have plenty of oil, coal, and alternative resources in our country to take care of our needs. This may seem to be a radical approach, but we have vast reserves of coal and we have new technology to use coal with minimal pollution.

In addition, Biofuels such as Ethanol and Methanol can be produced easily. So, let the "Oil Producing Potentates (OPPs)" drink their oil. Since America is the leading consumer of oil, the laws of supply and demand would eventially dictate lower oil prices world- wide. And, we could keep our dollars at home in order to stimulate our own growth and development.
