Strengthening the Arsenal
Posted by Suzanne Nossel
Tomorrow afternoon us Arsenalists will be powwowing down in DC, taking stock now that we're roughly 3 months into the enterprise. In the meantime, if readers have comments, criticism, praise or ideas for this site, please post away. We promise to read and consider faithfully.
Excellent site. My only advice is shorter posts.

Shorter posts and more interaction with the readers.
And you prob should have more people that have, y'know, served in the military on staff.
You should also have beat bloggers. For example, someone dedicated to Iraq, someone dedicated to Afghanistan and someone dedicated to recruiting.

Love the commentary.
Only suggestion is, if possible, evolve your blog format to accommodate threaded/nested threads (like KOS).
Just easier to track than the flat format.
Excellent site.

I love the site. Writing is excellent, thoughtful and topical. My only suggestion is that you "go at it" a little more with one another. That'd spice things up.

I second what Carl says here - I would love to see some tough smart knowledgeable army guy, with a liberal bent, on the site, posting. (The right thinks these don't exist, so prove them wrong!)
I would love to see balanced beat reporters with a liberal bent as well.

Like the intelligent, thoughtful discussion just the way it is...don't even mind hearing from the other side on occasion (as long as it is reasoned and not O'Reilly-like)...actually I take that back..I have David Brooks to annoy me that way...
Keep up the good work

Great site.
I agree that a military contributor would be ideal, but in the meantime I'd suggest more links to the army's bi-monthly "Military Review" at http://www.leavenworth.army.mil/milrev/index.htm and to International Crisis Group.
A sample of articles from the May-June Military Review:
*Phase IV Operations: Where Wars are Really Won
*Saving the All-Volunteer Force
*"Best Practices" in Counterinsurgency
*Shaping the African Standby Force: Developments, Challenges, and Prospects
*Transforming in Peace and War
*The U.S. Joint Task Force Experience in Liberia
You already know about ICG.
Posted by: Jeff Owen | June 17, 2005 at 04:28 AM
When I said "more links to" I meant "more quotes from and links to" Military Review articles and ICG.
Posted by: Jeff Owen | June 17, 2005 at 04:42 AM
...don't consciously do anything to the site- it’s excellent. besides, it will evolve around the staff’s interests.
Posted by: doc | June 17, 2005 at 08:08 AM
Actually you should serve your propaganda straight up and not with unbrellas on top.
I do enjoy though, watching DA and Rozen try to soft pedal their neocon shared vision of a democratic mid east secured by the blood and treasure of ordinary Americans.
Sorry but you are seriously naive...Isrmerica, Inc isn't going to work out in Arabia. History is against it...and so by the way are most Americans and soon the military will be questioning their own leadership...and then honey, it will really be over.

I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen. I just don't have much to say right now, but so it goes. I've basically been doing nothing to speak of, but shrug. Today was a loss. I don't care. That's how it is.

The best prospect for getting the Europeans/others involved at this stage remains the same as it was before the war: working through the UN. (Setting aside of course, for purposes of this discussion, the self-imposed political restraints that make this administration extremely unlikely to work in this vein.) Specifically, other-than-US troops on the Buy Flomax Online ground, whether through NATO, in non-combat roles, or whatever, is not happening without a Security Council mandate. Secondly, greater international participation in contracting for redevelopment is essential to de-Americanize the crisis, but this also is unlikely to happen without some international oversight and coordination of the reconstruction effort, at the very least as a perceived Buy Glucophage Online objective venue for discussion and planning, and the UN is the only institution with the experience and capactity to run such a program. In addition to the carrot of contract prospects, the international community is likely to respond favorably to moves toward greater accountability by the US. It is very unlikely and probably even undesirable that this accountability will come in the form of some US commitment to international supervision of "security" practices: detention, interrogation, and military actions generally. However, the administration of reconstruction monies is an area that is in desperate need of transparency and tough effective oversight, and subjecting reconstruction financing and contract awards to a system of inspections and accountability in which other nations can participate has great value as a signal to the rest of the world that the US is willing to play by the rules and to cooperate with other nations. Again, the institution best suited to take on the task of providing some international accountability in contracting is the UN.

America is not going to give up anything that smacks of command over military operations, and is not going to do anything that looks like capitulating to international pressure to change the actions of the military. However, I think there is great potential for the US to get some help with some practical problems as well as some much-needed international cover by allowing the UN and the Europeans into the game in a way that relinquishes some authority without Buy Prilosec Online making the current administration looking like it's selling out to the French and Germans.
